Dialysis is a treatment for people who have renal failure. When you have renal failure, your kidneys don't filter blood as well as they should. As a result, wastes and poisons build up in your bloodstream. Dialysis aids your kidneys in their function by removing waste and excess fluid from your blood. If you have kidney failure or end-stage renal disease, you may need dialysis (ESRD). Injuries and diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and lupus can lead to kidney damage. Some people may get kidney difficulties for no obvious reason. Kidney failure can be a long-term condition or it can develop suddenly (acutely) as a result of a major illness or injury. This type of renal failure may go away as you heal. There are five phases of kidney disease. Stage 5 kidney disease is defined as an end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure by healthcare professionals. At this point, the kidneys are only doing roughly 10% to 15% of their normal function. You may require dialysis or a kidney transplant to keep alive. Some people undergo dialysis while waiting for a transplant.
